Happy 5th Birthday to Border Kids Code!
There’s just something about birthdays you know. They always get you thinking about about the years before. Here’s a quick snapshot! So, five years ago we gathered around a table at Marcos’, our co-founder’s, apartment frustrated because nobody was offering summer tech courses in the Rio Grande Valley that were engaging, culturally relevant, aligned to standards our kids needed to know, and affordable! (Affordable was super important to us.) Then, like all good educators, we decided to take matters into our own hands and Border Kids Code was born! We then went from a small apartment table to a small storage room that Sylvan McAllen let us borrow to beta test our curriculum. Five years later we teched our way into the hearts of kids in school districts like Sharyland, La Joya, McAllen, Harlingen, and Edinburg, just to name a few.
We’ve even hosted some rad professional development to a ton of real cool teachers in PSJA, Mission, and even teamed up with UTRGV to host a year long online class called Club Code UTRGV. We were shining across the valley and found ourselves recognized as a White House Bright Spot alongside Mission EDC for our work in Code the Town.
We’ve learned some tough lessons, met some incredible disruptors, and always kept the students in the RGV super close to our hearts. We made Border Kids for them. We’ve been, and will continue to be, about creating relevant tech learning opportunities that our kids demand in order for them to be competitive in the workforce. We’re preparing them for emerging technologies by exposing them to opportunities they’ve never been exposed to as well as giving them skill sets for professions that don’t even exist today!
We’ve stayed on top of the research and are excited to celebrate the potential of every child sitting in classrooms across our region. For our 5th birthday we are excited to give school districts our latest coding, drone, and our NEW e-commerce and digital storytelling weeklong summer courses aimed at understanding, applying, creating, and competing in learning experiences that also embeds state and national computer science standards. Invite us over to your school and our certified teachers will take it from there. We’ll even bring you cake. 😉
So happy 5th birthday to us- all of us!
